Youth Commissioners Add AmeriCorps Member Voice to ServeOhio Discussions

Departing Ohio Governor John Kasich named two new youth commissioners to the Ohio Commission on Service and Volunteerism on 11/1/18. Mary Jeter and Hannah Sublett will add their unique perspective to the 21-member commission – providing insight on the AmeriCorps experience and youth engagement in service. Federal and state legislation require ServeOhio to seat two commissioners under the age of 25 who are active or recent participants in AmeriCorps or another national service program.

Mary (pictured above, middle) is a recent Ohio AmeriCorps alum – serving with the Ohio Stream Restore Corps at Rural Action in Athens. Mary served as a Zero Waste Pledge Coordinator helping local businesses gain access to waste management resources and building productive relationships between community stakeholders and Rural Action. Prior to relocating to Ohio for her service, Mary was active in environmental issues and community development in her native Maryland. Mary’s initial commission term expires April 2020.

Hannah (pictured here) is currently serving her second Ohio AmeriCorps term with the Zoo Unto Others AmeriCorps Program at the Zoological Society of Cincinnati. As the Living Classroom Education Access Fund School Operations Member, Hannah coordinates educational experiences for students visiting the zoo and provides professional development to educators.  In addition, Hannah is active in Ohio LeaderCorps, a statewide group of Ohio AmeriCorps Members that raises awareness of AmeriCorps and promotes positive service experiences throughout the state.  Hannah’s initial commission term expires April 2021.

ServeOhio thanks both Mary and Hannah for their AmeriCorps service and looks forward to the valuable member/alum perspective they will bring to commission discussions.
