Notes From Saint Paul

On May 7-9, 2019 America’s Service Commissions (ASC), in partnership with ServeMinnesota, hosted the first of three regional National Service Training conferences in Saint Paul, Minnesota. ServeOhio and Ohio AmeriCorps program staff came together with Central Region national service program colleagues, state service commission staff, Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) and volunteer management partners to collaborate, share best practices, and learn new ideas from the field. The conference allowed participants to dig deep into topics of AmeriCorps program and grant management, volunteer management, and field updates.

The National Service Training conferences present a great opportunity to think about AmeriCorps service on a national scale and the similarity of needs of across state lines. State Service Commissions make national service local—they determine the social needs of their states and set those policy and program priorities accordingly. As the host state, ServeMinnesota and their AmeriCorps programs had the opportunity to share about the service they make possible across the state. As the Minnesota programs shared out—similarities between Ohio programs became apparent. The need for service does not exist in a vacuum and there are awesome opportunities to serve as an AmeriCorps member in the areas you care about from state to state and region to region.
