October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.  And this month, across the state, there are several ways to engage with the community, including domestic violence education campaigns, outreach events, and memorial activities.  Ohio Domestic Violence Network (ODVN) has a list of events by county and date where you can get involved.  There are many local agencies who are working to end domestic violence not only in our state but across the nation.

As mentioned in the blog post in July, ServeOhio is proud to Partner with ODVN this year to launch a new initiative, the Financial Freedom Corps.  Many abusers seek to control their partners through financial abuse. The National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV) reports that as many as 99% of domestic violence cases involve some kind of financial abuse. Financial abuse can destroy survivors' credit and make it nearly impossible to find housing.

To assist in empowering survivors to take charge of their financial futures, ODVN created the Financial Freedom Corps program. Financial Freedom Corps will place 20 AmeriCorps Service Members at 18 different domestic violence agencies across Ohio. The members will provide financial empowerment classes as well as housing and goal-oriented youth empowerment programming to survivors of domestic violence.  The program will launch later this fall.

If you or someone you know is impacted by Domestic Violence, please call 1-800-934-9840.  You can find additional resources on the Ohio Domestic Violence Network website.
