As summer vacation quickly approaches, many teens are looking for ways to spend their days. Volunteering in the summer can provide exposure to issues facing local communities while also building important skills in teambuilding and problem solving. Most organizations that utilize volunteers have opportunities for youth, but requirements and restrictions vary given the mission and capacity of the organization. ServeOhio recommends utilizing a volunteer connector – an organization that connects individuals who want to volunteer with organizations seeking volunteers – to learn more about what is available in your community. Ohio is home to over 30 Volunteer Connector Organizations that can help you in your search. If your community does not have such an organization, you can use a national volunteer search engine – such as VolunteerMatch or All for Good – to locate an opportunity near you. Click on the Volunteer tab at www.serveohio.org to see a map of Volunteer Connector Organizations with contact information and for links to national networks. There are many ways to volunteer and you should look for an opportunity that fits you best. Think about the issues and causes that are important to you; consider the skills that you bring to the opportunity and what new skills you might want to gain; and be open to trying new things and building new relationships. Good luck and have a great summer!
