We know AmeriCorps members get things done, but did you know their experience also allows them to grow professionally? That was the case for 28-year-old Carmella Cadusale who shares her experience serving as an Ohio history day coordinator for Region 5 Ohio where she realized her skillset and talents. Question: Where and when did you serve? Answer: I served with Region 5 Ohio in Youngstown, Ohio, from 2016-2018. Q: What did you do as a member? A: I served as an Ohio history day coordinator where I led workshops for local historical societies regarding exhibitions, archiving and managing the collection of items. I also led and initiated an oral history project regarding food history in Stark County. This project evolved into an exhibit for the McKinley Presidential Museum that is currently on display through January 2020. Additionally, I supported and coordinated Youngstown State University’s annual History Across the Humanities Conference. Q: How did serving as an AmeriCorps member impact your life? A: AmeriCorps encouraged me to explore my existing skills and to challenge them. By doing so, I have evolved as a professional and I’ve been able to leverage these skills in other fields of work. Q: What did you enjoy most about your experience? A: I discovered that my talents and skills are very multi-dimensional. I learned that I am capable of taking on multiple roles and truly make an impact within my community through the projects that I led or supported. Q: Would you recommend joining AmeriCorps to your peers? Why or why not? A: YES. AmeriCorps truly is life changing. It doesn’t matter where you are in your journey. There’s a sense of validation, especially when you are unsure of what's next. AmeriCorps allows you to explore your skills, nurture them, and discover what you enjoy and/or truly passionate about. Q: What’s next for you? A: Currently, I am an executive assistant in the medical device industry. I entered this role right out of AmeriCorps. The company I work for was interested in my diverse skills, especially in my experience with coordinating multiple events. A big part of my current role is coordinating and managing our global tradeshows, student engagement, and philanthropic outreach. We do approximately 30 events a year globally. I have been able to manage events all throughout the United States, Asia and Europe. I’ve recently finished a three-week event in Paris, France! AmeriCorps has truly opened such great opportunities for me and would truly recommend the program!
