2019 Year in Review

As we ring in the New Year, it is a great time to reflect on our work and all the amazing accomplishments in service and volunteerism we saw in our state over the past twelve months. Below are just a few highlights of our work this year.

1. Celebrated the 25th Anniversary of AmeriCorps members getting things done in Ohio

This past October, we convened 700 AmeriCorps members, program staff, alumni, and local and statewide leaders in Columbus to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of AmeriCorps. Check out our event recap video here. Since 1994, over 35,000 Ohio residents have served in AmeriCorps – providing 56 million hours of service and earning $118.2 million in education awards.  This year alone, over 900 AmeriCorps will serve 1.2 million hours of service and earn $4.2 million in education awards. Check out some great AmeriCorps impact stories here.

2. Launched four new AmeriCorps Programs

ServeOhio added four new operational AmeriCorps programs to the portfolio this year dealing with such issues as improving water quality, reducing barriers to success on college campuses, increasing early literacy instruction in preschool settings and mentoring students to elevate school attendance. In total, 900+ AmeriCorps members are serving at over 600 sites in the current program year. View the complete portfolio here. For more information on AmeriCorps funding, click here.

3. Launched Skills-Based Volunteerism Training Academy

This year, we launched the Skills-Based Volunteerism Training Academy to increase the capacity of nonprofits in Ohio to take advantage of highly-skilled professional volunteers. ServeOhio and our partner Common Impact trained and supported nine organizations across Ohio in the effective utilization of skills-based volunteers in projects that increase the capacity and effectiveness of their individual organizations. Our second cohort launches this spring! Learn more here.

4. Honored outstanding volunteerism in Ohio

The ServeOhio Awards honor outstanding people, groups, and initiatives who make great contributions to their local communities and the state through service and volunteerism. During National Volunteer Week, we presented 5 ServeOhio Awards to outstanding volunteers and volunteer initiatives in each region of the state. Read about our inspiring recipients here.

5. National Days of Service grew in 2019

ServeOhio provides grants to support volunteer projects organized for National Days of Service in communities across Ohio. This year we added ServeOhio Day to the mix with MLK Day, Global Youth Service Day and Make A Difference Day. In total, ServeOhio funded 62 community service projects across the state that engaged over 3,400 volunteers in over 10,000 hours of service.

6. Supported AmeriCorps members as volunteer mobilizers in Ohio

AmeriCorps members spend thousands of hours serving their communities, but they also recruit additional community volunteers to increase their total impact. In the last program year, AmeriCorps members recruited and engaged 7,941 volunteers who gave 49,970 hours of service to improve their local communities!

7. Hosted the annual Ohio Conference on Service & Volunteerism

ServeOhio convened 300 volunteer and service professionals at our annual conference. The Ohio Conference on Service & Volunteerism is the only statewide resource that creates opportunities for inspiration, connection, and building of 21st century skill sets that support the continued evolution and impact of Ohio's service and volunteerism professions.

8. Wrapped first Year of LeaderCorps

This year we graduated the first class of Ohio AmeriCorps LeaderCorps members! LeaderCorps provides a statewide network in which Ohio’s AmeriCorps members share ideas, experiences, and a spirit of service while taking a leadership position in their AmeriCorps program. Each LeaderCorps representative plays a significant role in making AmeriCorps a household name by giving at least two AmeriCorps outreach presentations, organizing at least one local service project around AmeriCorps Week or National Day of Service, and assisting with the coordination of the All Member Event and/or AmeriCorps Week activities.

9. Released an AmeriCorps PSA

ServeOhio promoted an AmeriCorps PSA to build awareness of the program across Ohio. Airplay of the AmeriCorps PSA is raising the visibility of the service that AmeriCorps members provide to local communities every day. The PSA has been aired more than 11,700 times by 212 stations across the state. Look for a new campaign in May 2020.

Thank you to all the members, program directors, site supervisors, volunteer administrators and community volunteers who work to make Ohio communities stronger every day of the year. We look forward to 2020 and working with each of you to bring a new decade of service and volunteer innovation and impact to our state.
